Greater Manchester Probation Trust

Who we are

Greater Manchester Probation Trust is one of the largest of the 35 probation trusts across England and Wales. We cover a population of around 2.5 million people and 495 square miles within Greater Manchester.

Nationally the Probation Service and the Prison Service form the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), a department of the Ministry of Justice.

As one of the statutory criminal justice agencies, we have a duty to protect the public, to ensure the proper punishment of offenders and to rehabilitate offenders.  We work alongside other criminal justice agencies: the Police, the Prison Service, the Courts, the Crown Prosecution Service, and with many other partner agencies in Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester Probation Trust is a key employer. We currently employ around 1,400 staff at over 40 sites across the county to provide services to manage offenders and deliver interventions, for example, unpaid work, programmes, provision of accommodation in approved premises.

Probation staff are responsible for a wide range of projects to benefit the community.
